Christmas Eve will be cold, windy, sunny and then showery at night. Christmas Day will be cold but sunny with chance of hail showers in the morning. Boxing day will have on and off showers throughout the day and night.
The battle between warm and cold air that we have seen last week will be lost to colder air on Christmas Eve, which means colder temperatures and frosty nights for Christmas Day & Boxing Day. This doesn’t mean snow, it just means this colder air will bring colder daytime temperatures of around 7C, nightly lows of 1C and a mixture of sunny spells and light rain to areas on merseyside such as the Wirral. Cold winds will also make the feel like temperature feel a lot chillier than the actual temp.

Christmas Eve
A largely dry day with just a few showers around, these perhaps turning wintry over the higher ground. Despite the sunny spells it will be colder than of late. Maximum Temperature 8C.
Day: Sunny Intervals with a chance of light rain showers, Windy. High: 8C. Wind Gust: 40mph. Night: Cloudy, Low: 7C
Christmas Day
Chilly to start with scattered showers. Becoming dry everywhere during the afternoon with plenty of sunshine, but feeling cold. Clear spells during the evening will lead to a widespread frost. Maximum Temperature 6C.
Day: Cold, Cloudy start, Chance of hail/rain showers in the morning. Turning bright and sunny early afternoon. High: 7C, Wind: 35mph. Night: Cloudy, Low: 2C
Boxing Day
Colder still to start Boxing Day, wet and windy weather arriving from the west later, lasting through Saturday.
Day: Cloudy start, light rain on and off throughout the rest of day. High: 5C Wind: 36mph. Night: Rain showers Low: 4C.
Snow Chance: It is possible that somewhere in the country sees some snowflakes falling on christmas day – the chances currently look highest for hills in the north.
Ladbrokes has cut the odds of snow on December 25, and is now offering 5/2 in Aberdeen, 3/1 in Glasgow, 4/1 in London and 5/1 in Birmingham.
The RAC expects the number of motorists to break down will increase by 20 per cent if we experience wintry conditions such snow and ice.
A mild end to december would mean 2014 is shaping up to be the warmest ever.
The UK’s mean temperature from the beginning of January to late November is 1.6C above the long-term average, making it the warmest in records dating back to 1910, according to the Met Office.
A wet December would also mean the wettest year ever.
It already has been one of the wettest year’s for the UK on record, with 1162 mm of rain between 1 January and 25 November. Average rainfall in December would make 2014 the fourth wettest year in records dating back to 1910. But a very wet month could still break the UK record set in 2000 of 1337 mm.
